Fort Bend County Forestry Mulching: Texas Land Clearing, Underbrush and Site Prep Services

Fort Bend County is flat black clay growing tallow, and forestry mulching to clear land is the only way to clear it in winter without leaving ruts a truck can hide in. The skid steer with a mulching head runs $3,000 a day with transport and takes a half-acre of tallow down to chips in one day. Nothing burns, nothing leaves on a truck. I've cleared lots from Fulshear to Needville this way since 2018. Call (713) 587-6978 or send three photos of your place. Janine will have a number back to you by tomorrow.

What Grows Here and How We Use Forestry Mulching to Clear Land in Fort Bend County

Fort Bend County has its own mix of chinese tallow, mesquite toward the south, coastal prairie grasses, huisache. We walk the plan through access, soil, and drainage. If a mapped floodplain or waterway is involved, we check the required approvals before dirt moves.

Chinese tallow first, then huisache and mesquite toward Needville and the south county, with coastal prairie grass and every shrub, bush and vine that moves in once the hay cutting stops. Live oak mottes and pecan stand along the Brazos and Oyster Creek, and those we work around. Texas land clearing and brush removal comes in several forms, including forestry mulching, and on this clay it is the one that does not leave a scar. The drum teeth take a tallow trunk up to 8 inches in a pass; mesquite is harder wood and slows the clearing by a third at the same diameter. Selective clearing is the usual order: undergrowth out, the oaks left standing with the chips under them. No East Texas pine down here and no acres of cedar like the Hill Country; cedar on a Fort Bend lot is one ornamental somebody planted. Mesquite doesn't grow in Fort Bend so much as it refuses to leave. Tell us which trees stay.

Brush Clearing on Acreage and Pasture Around Richmond, Rosenberg and Fulshear

Turner Land and Pine acreage & pasture mulching around richmond, rosenberg, fulshear in the Houston

Most acreage calls here are for 3-5 acres west of the Grand Parkway: a Fulshear horse pasture gone to tallow, fence lines on a Needville farm, a Richmond tract a land developer wants walked. Land clearing might mean a dozer to you. On blackland clay in Texas it means a drum, because the clay stays wet from November into March and the skid steer on wide tracks floats where a dozer sinks to the belly pan. The skid steer clears 1 to 3 acres a day at $3,000; the dedicated high-horsepower mulcher clears 4 to 8 at $4,000 plus transport. A rancher or landowner gets usable pasture back the same week the clearing ends, and the land development crew gets a corridor cut for the survey without a haul-off bill. On our jobs in Rosenberg we have taken a 5-acre tallow pasture to chips in two days, and I sketched it before and after. Timber folks call this vegetation management. I call it clearing brush and leaving it where it fell.

Texas Land Clearing for New Home Lots and Backyards

Turner Land and Pine residential mulching in the Houston area

A half-acre lot in a Fulshear or Richmond section is one day and one machine, $3,000. The Katy half-acre in my Field Sketches sits on the Fort Bend side: tallow and yaupon for a custom build, one day, $3,000, completely cleared to chips before the builder's fill truck came. That is the most common land clearing we do in this county, for a property owner who bought the overgrown lot next door or a business owner who needs a pad on Highway 59 ready for the surveyor. The skid steer fits a 10-foot gate. We clear brush to the line, including brush along the HOA fence, and leave a chip layer two to four inches thick that the fill goes on top of. Land clearing services inside Sugar Land and Fulshear come with city tree rules for new builds and a no-burn rule; a dozer crew that would create burn piles is out before it starts, and TCEQ compliance never comes up. After Harvey we cleared storm brush off lots like these in Richmond with nothing but the skid steer. Send photos of the gate as well as the brush.

PRICING / LOCAL WORK

Mulching and Clearing Cost in Fort Bend County, TX

Numbers first. The lot decides the final price.

$1,000 to $2,500 an acre by density, or by the day: $3,000 for the skid steer with transport included, $4,000 plus transport for the big machine. Dense tallow thickets add a day. Wet clay adds a day, and in Fort Bend that is most of the winter. Minimum trip is $1,200 to $1,500. Texas land clearing with a dozer and haul-off starts at $4,000 an acre and adds $600 to $1,200 a load, which is why brush clearing by mulching wins on nine of ten lots here. Stumps are a separate line, $150 to $400 each by diameter; excavation services and site preparation for a pad are separate too, and the fill estimate comes from your dirt contractor, not from me. I do not pour concrete or install septic. Professional forestry mulching services should hand you a sketch and an invoice, and ours are on the page when we finish. The on-site estimate is free inside Greater Houston. Call (713) 587-6978 with the address and I will tell you which machine and how many days of clearing.

Mowing Sprouts and Dealing With Stumps After Clearing on Blackland Clay

Turner Land and Pine what to do after mulching on blackland clay, low and flat in the Houston area

Leave the chips down until the builder grades. On blackland clay the layer is a natural erosion barrier; this clay shrinks in August and swells in January, and a bare lot cracks open in summer and runs off into the ditch with the first Texas norther. People call the chips eco-friendly. I call them the cheapest fill you will ever get. Mow the tallow sprouts when they reach knee high, twice the first summer, because tallow roots run 3 feet into the clay and will overgrow a lot in two seasons. Stump removal is separate from clearing: we grind to the dirt, but a crown over 8 inches stays under the chips, and stump grinding runs $150 to $400 each before a slab. For site prep, the builder rakes the chips off the pad footprint and brings select fill so the slab sits 18 inches above the street. I do not talk about environmental sustainability. I talk about topsoil that stays on your lot after the land clearing is done.

THE MAP / HOUSTON AREA

Service Area: The Towns Where We Mulch in Fort Bend County

Our equipment yard is in Hockley. Send the address and Janine will confirm the route.

Richmond, Rosenberg, Fulshear, Sugar Land, Needville, Missouri City and the south side of Katy, plus the open ground along FM 1093 and FM 359. Our yard is in Hockley, an hour down the Grand Parkway to Fulshear, and the terrain is flat enough that transport is the only thing distance changes on a service call. Texas has 254 counties and we clear in seven of them around Houston; Fulshear pulled 3,264 single-family permits in 2025 by the Census Building Permits Survey, more than any town in the seven, so this county is where the clearing is. Land clearing in Fort Bend means tallow and mesquite; tree removal of a single big pecan beside a house is a different trade, and I know people who do it. Tell Janine which side of the Brazos you are on.

FAQ / STRAIGHT ANSWERS

Fort Bend County Questions: Mulching, Stump Grinding and Excavation Services

If your question is about wet ground, Janine will ask me.

How much does clearing cost per acre in Fort Bend County?

$1,000 to $2,500 an acre by density, or $3,000 a day for the skid steer with transport included. A half-acre of tallow is one day. Most Fort Bend land clearing jobs are under an acre and sit inside a new section, so the day rate governs, and the fill that comes after is a separate bill from your dirt man.

Will grass grow after clearing with a mulching head?

Yes, through the chips, usually by the second month in a wet Texas spring. On blackland clay the layer keeps the surface from crusting and shades out the first tallow sprouts. Do not rake it off; rake it and the next downpour takes the top inch of clay into the road ditch and the drainage district notices.

Does mulching remove stumps?

No. The head cuts trees and brush to the dirt and leaves the root crown under the chips. Tallow crowns under 4 inches rot in a season; mesquite does not rot, it resprouts, so a mesquite crown either gets ground out at $150 to $400 or you mow it for life. I tell you which before the clearing starts.

Is mulching better than traditional land clearing with a dozer?

On a Fort Bend lot, yes, nine times in ten. Forestry mulchers leave the topsoil and the layer; a dozer scrapes both into a pile you then pay to burn or haul, and on wet Texas clay it leaves ruts the fill truck falls into. Dozer clearing wins only for a same-day pad grade or Texas timber over 12 inches.

How do I get a number for clearing my lot?

Call (713) 587-6978 or send three photos and the address. Janine answers every form and call and has a number back by tomorrow. Last spring on a lot off FM 1463 near Fulshear the owner sent photos at breakfast and we cleared it that Thursday. Forest management on a big Texas tract gets a walk first; a lot gets a number first.
