Forestry Mulching and Texas Land Clearing Services in Houston: Underbrush, Stump Grinding and Site Prep
Mulching is most of what we do. One machine cuts, grinds and spreads in one pass, and nothing leaves your place. Skid steer: $3,000 a day, transport included, anything under 8 inches. The 11-foot high-horsepower machine: $4,000 a day plus transport, eats anything. I've cleared this way since 2018, from Dayton to Fulshear. Wet ground adds a day. Call (713) 587-6978 or send three photos. Janine will have a number back to you by tomorrow.
HOUSTON, TEXAS
What Forestry Mulching Is: Clearing Without Burn Piles or Haul-Off
It is land clearing with a drum of carbide teeth on the front of a tracked mulcher. The drum spins at about 2,000 rpm, takes a standing tree down from the top, and grinds trunk, limbs and stumps flush with the dirt. The chips stay where they fall as ground cover. Nothing is stacked, nothing is burned, nothing is trucked. The skid steer head handles trees under 8 inches; the 11-foot machine handles whatever is standing. One service, one operator, one pass. Rough terrain slows the clearing down, and a pile of old fence wire stops it cold, so walk your place for metal before we come. In Texas, that is how most clearing under 20 acres gets done now.
Mulching vs. Bulldozing and Burning for Land Clearing

A dozer leaves you bare dirt and a pile the size of a house. Then you burn it under TCEQ outdoor burning rules, if your county burn ban allows it and you are outside Houston city limits, where open burning is not allowed at all. Or you load it: $600 to $1,200 a load, 6 to 10 loads an acre of timber. Mulching skips both. Nothing to create burn piles with, nothing to truck, and the chip layer is a natural erosion barrier on sand that would otherwise wash into your ditch in the first April storm. Compliance is simple when nothing leaves the site. On wet gumbo clay the dozer sinks and the tracked machine floats. Full land clearing might still be the call for a slab footprint. For pasture, trails and view clearing in Texas, mulching wins.
Brush Clearing of Tallow, Yaupon, Privet and Pine Understory
South of FM 1960 the growth is tallow, yaupon, privet and hackberry on gumbo clay. Tallow is the worst of it. Tallow doesn't die. It waits. We cut the crown 2 inches below grade and tell every landowner to mow twice the first summer, or it comes back from the root. Yaupon shreds clean. North of FM 1960 the understory is young loblolly pine, sweetgum and yaupon on sand, and we clear brush and undergrowth like that at 3-5 acres a day. We leave the oak and the big pine you flag. Vine and briar wrap the drum but cut fine; a shrub or a bush under 8 inches takes a few seconds. Mesquite and cedar we see only toward Brazoria and the coast, and I have never done acres of cedar. That is Hill Country work.
Residential Mulching Service: Clearing Lots, Backyards and Trails

A half-acre residential lot of tallow and yaupon is one day with the skid steer, $3,000. Backyards on an acre in Cypress or Spring run the same day rate; the limit is gate width, 78 inches for the skid steer. Trail clearing through a wooded lot is an 8-foot corridor at about 2,400 feet a day. For a property owner who wants shade kept, selective clearing takes the understory and leaves every tree over the diameter you set. A business owner with an overgrown pad site gets the same machine and the same day. Site prep for a slab is a different job; mulching leaves roots, and a slab wants them out. Send three photos and tell Janine what stays.
Texas Land Clearing on Acreage North of Houston: Montgomery, Waller and Liberty Counties

Ten acres in Dayton, Liberty County: pasture reclamation, bottomland tallow and privet, wet in March, dry in May. Four days with the high-horsepower machine, $17,500 plus transport. That sketch is the one I show every Texas rancher who asks why we wait for dry ground. On our jobs in Montgomery County the ground is sand under loblolly pine, and the big machine runs 4 to 8 acres a day there. Waller County, where our yard sits in Hockley, is post oak and yaupon on fence lines and old farm pasture. Liberty County is the Trinity River floodplain: soft from November to March, and a tracked machine at 6 psi is the only thing that works it. A land developer clearing a corridor for land development along the Grand Parkway, or vegetation management on a pipeline, gets the same day rate as the neighbor next door.
Clearing Cost per Acre, per Day, and Excavation Services Extra
I tell you about the wet ground, the extra machine, and the haul-off before work starts. Not after.
Mulching runs $1,000 to $2,500 an acre in Southeast Texas, by density. By the day: skid steer $3,000 with transport, 1 to 3 acres a day; the 11-foot machine $4,000 plus transport, 4 to 8 acres a day. Minimum trip charge $1,200 to $1,500 for one machine on one short day. Dense tallow thickets add a day. Wet ground adds a day. Stump removal below grade with excavation services is extra, and stump grinding on a lot we did not clear runs $150 to $400 each. There is no cost for the sketch, and the on-site estimate is free inside Greater Houston. Call (713) 587-6978 or send three photos and the address, and Janine will have the number by tomorrow.

What Size Trees We Can Grind When Clearing
Forestry mulchers come in two sizes here. The skid steer takes anything under 8 inches at the base. The 11-foot machine takes a 20-inch pine, and takes it slowly: a tree that size is two minutes of grinding and a bigger chip. For clearing past 20 inches, tree removal with a saw first is cheaper; then the drum eats the top and the grinder takes what is left. Pine chips fine. Oak over 12 inches is hard on teeth, about one carbide set per two acres of it. Hackberry and tallow shred soft. If your trees are mostly under 8 inches, you need the small machine. Mostly over, the big one. Send a photo with a tape or a boot against the trunk.
After Mulching: Mow Twice and Let the Mulch Layer Work

The chip layer runs 2 to 4 inches and takes two to three years to break down into the soil. Leave it. It holds moisture through August and keeps the sand or clay from washing. Grass seeds through it fine; broadcast rye in fall and Bermuda in April. Mow whatever sprouts, twice the first summer, and yaupon and tallow give up. Let it overgrow for two summers and you are back to a brush clearing job, and paying twice. For a pad or a garden, rake the chips aside and the ground is usable the day we leave. Eco-friendly is a word I do not use much, but nothing was burned and nothing went to a landfill, which is what environmental sustainability means on a lot in Texas. Forest management on a pine tract means a pass every three to five years.
Clearing Service Area: Seven Counties Around Houston, TX
Our equipment yard is in Hockley. Send the address and Janine will confirm the route.
Harris, Montgomery, Fort Bend, Waller, Liberty, Brazoria and Galveston. Texas has 254 counties; we work seven and send the rest to crews near them. East Texas pine country starts at Montgomery County, where 11,597 single-family permits went out in 2025 by the Census Building Permits Survey. Harris County pulled 16,940, most of them on tallow and clay. Brazoria and Galveston have USACE wetland buffers, and we do not cross a delineation line. Professional forestry mulching services, including forestry mulching to clear land for a build, including brush clearing on fence lines, and Texas land clearing and brush removal on acreage, run at the same day rate in every county. Our crews are insured. I do not pour concrete, set septic or demolish houses. Call (713) 587-6978 or send three photos and your county. Janine answers both.
Mulching and Texas Land Clearing Questions
If your question is about wet ground, Janine will ask me.
What does mulching run per acre in Texas?
$1,000 to $2,500 an acre in Greater Houston, by density. Light yaupon and young pine sit at the low end; tallow thickets on clay sit at the top of Texas land clearing prices. Day rates are $3,000 for the skid steer with transport and $4,000 plus transport for the 11-foot machine. Minimum trip is $1,200 to $1,500.
Will grass grow after mulching?
Yes, through the chips, usually by the second Texas spring, and the clearing looks like pasture by the third. The layer is 2 to 4 inches and breaks down in two to three years; rye in fall and Bermuda in April take fine through it. Do not till it in. Mow what sprouts and the tallow gives up by the second summer.
Does mulching remove stumps?
No. It grinds them flush or an inch or two below grade, and the roots stay. For a slab, a septic field or a driveway you want them dug out with the excavator, priced extra. For pasture, trails and view clearing, flush is fine and the roots rot in three to five years.
Is mulching better than traditional land clearing?
For anything that is not a slab footprint, yes. Traditional clearing with a dozer and burn piles leaves bare dirt, takes topsoil and needs a TCEQ-legal burn day or 6 to 10 truckloads an acre. Mulching is one machine, one pass, nothing leaves. Completely cleared bare dirt for a foundation is still dozer work, and I say so up front.
How long does mulching take?
A half acre of tallow and yaupon is one day. The skid steer does 1 to 3 acres a day, the big machine 4 to 8. Ten acres of bottomland in Dayton took four days. Wet ground adds a day, and in Texas that means November to March on clay. Janine books by the day, so the clearing date is yours.
How do I get a quote?
Call (713) 587-6978 or send three photos and the address, and Janine has a number back by tomorrow. The on-site estimate is free inside Greater Houston. We write the day rate, the machine and the dry-ground plan on one page with the sketch, and the invoice matches it. Clearing jobs with site preparation for a slab get a second line, and that service is priced on its own.
