Harris County Forestry Mulching: Texas Land Clearing, Underbrush and Site Prep Services
Harris County lots are small, tight and full of tallow, and forestry mulching to clear land is the one tool that fits all three. The skid steer with a mulching head runs $3,000 a day with transport and takes a half-acre of tallow and yaupon down to a layer of chips in one day. Nothing burns, nothing leaves on a truck. I've cleared lots from Katy to Crosby this way since 2018, and it is the land clearing most of Texas should be doing. Call (713) 587-6978 or send three photos of your place. Janine will have a number back to you by tomorrow.
COUNTY FIELD GUIDE
Forestry Mulching to Clear Land in Harris County: What We Mulch
Harris County has its own mix of chinese tallow, yaupon, privet, hackberry, scattered pine north of fm 1960. We walk the plan through access, soil, and drainage. If a mapped floodplain or waterway is involved, we check the required approvals before dirt moves.
Chinese tallow, yaupon, privet and hackberry, which is every shrub, bush and vine that grows south of FM 1960 on gumbo clay. North of FM 1960, through Spring and Tomball, loblolly pine and water oak come in on sand and the land clearing runs a little slower per acre. No mesquite here; that starts south of the Brazos. Texas land clearing and brush removal comes in several forms, including forestry mulching, and this is the one that leaves your dirt where it was. The drum carries carbide teeth that take a tallow trunk up to 8 inches in a pass; over 8 inches the head chews instead of cuts, so that clearing goes to the big machine. Selective clearing is most of our work here: undergrowth out, the oaks and pines you point at left standing. The Hill Country clears acres of cedar. Harris County clears acres of tallow, and tallow comes back unless we grind the crown to the dirt. Tell us which trees stay.
The growth decides what can be mulched and what needs more than one pass.

gumbo clay; slow drainage; Harris County Flood Control District jurisdiction, floodplain development permit required in mapped floodplain. A clean lot is no use if water gets trapped against the next building pad. Tell us if the ground stays wet after a rain.
Acreage and Pasture Brush Clearing Around Houston, Katy and Cypress

Most acreage calls in Harris County are for 3-5 acres out past the Grand Parkway: a Cypress horse pasture gone to yaupon, a Hockley-side farm tract, fence lines around a Crosby homestead. Land clearing might mean a dozer to you. In Southeast Texas it means a drum, because the clay stays wet from November into March and the skid steer floats on it where a dozer sinks to the belly pan. On pasture the skid steer clears 1 to 3 acres a day; the dedicated high-horsepower mulcher clears 4 to 8 and runs $4,000 a day plus transport. A rancher or landowner gets usable pasture back the same week, and a land developer gets a corridor cut for the survey crew without a haul-off bill. On our jobs in Cypress we have taken a 4-acre tallow pasture to chips in two days, and I sketched it before and after. Timber folks call this vegetation management. I call it clearing brush and leaving it where it fell.
Texas Land Clearing for Residential Lots and Backyards

A half-acre lot behind a Katy or Spring subdivision is one day and one machine, $3,000. That is the most common clearing we do in this county: a property owner bought the overgrown lot next door, or a business owner needs a pad site completely cleared before the surveyor sets pins. The skid steer fits through a 10-foot gate, which matters when the only way in is between two houses. We clear brush to the fence, including brush the neighbor let through, leave a chip layer two to four inches thick, and the lot is walkable that afternoon. Land clearing services inside Houston city limits come with one rule: open burning is not allowed, so a dozer crew that would create burn piles is out before it starts. Mulching skips that and skips the TCEQ compliance paperwork with it. After Harvey we cleared this kind of brush in Crosby and Huffman with nothing but the skid steer. Send photos of the gate as well as the brush.
What Mulching and Clearing Cost in Harris County, TX
Numbers first. The lot decides the final price.
$1,000 to $2,500 an acre by density, or by the day: $3,000 for the skid steer with transport included, $4,000 plus transport for the big machine. Dense tallow thickets add a day. Wet ground adds a day. Minimum trip is $1,200 to $1,500 for one machine on a short day. Texas land clearing with a dozer and haul-off starts at $4,000 an acre and adds $600 to $1,200 a load, which is why brush clearing by mulching wins on nine of ten Harris County lots. Stumps are a separate line, $150 to $400 each by diameter; excavation services and site preparation for a pad are separate too, and I do not pour concrete or install septic. Professional forestry mulching services should hand you a sketch and an invoice, and ours are on the page when we finish. The on-site estimate is free inside Greater Houston. Call (713) 587-6978 with the address and I will tell you which machine and how many days of clearing.

Stumps, Sprouts and Mowing After Clearing on Gumbo Clay

Leave the chips down for a season. On gumbo clay the layer is a natural erosion barrier; it keeps the first hard Texas rain from cutting ruts and holds moisture so the grass under it comes back without seed. People call that eco-friendly. I call it topsoil that stays. Mow the tallow sprouts when they reach knee high, twice the first summer, because tallow roots run 3 feet into the clay and will overgrow a lot in two seasons if nobody cuts them. Stump removal is separate from clearing: we cut to the dirt, but a crown over 8 inches is still there under the chips, and stump grinding runs $150 to $400 each if you want it gone before a slab. For site prep, the builder rakes the chips to the lot line and brings fill. That is the whole program after land clearing. I do not talk about environmental sustainability. I talk about the clay staying on your lot instead of in the ditch.
Where We Work: Our Service Area Across Harris County
Our equipment yard is in Hockley. Send the address and Janine will confirm the route.
Houston, Katy, Cypress, Spring, Tomball, Humble, Crosby and Huffman, plus the unincorporated ground between them. Our yard is in Hockley, so the northwest side along Highway 290 and FM 2920 is the shortest haul, and the terrain is flat enough everywhere that transport is the only thing distance changes on a service call. Texas has 254 counties and we clear in seven of them around Houston, from the East Texas pine edge in Liberty County to the coastal clay in Galveston. Land clearing in Harris County means tallow; tree removal of a single big oak is a different trade, and I know people who do it. Land development crews along the Grand Parkway book us by the week. Tell Janine which side of FM 1960 you are on.

Stump Grinding, Excavation Services and Mulching: Questions from Harris County
If your question is about wet ground, Janine will ask me.
How much does clearing cost per acre in Harris County?
$1,000 to $2,500 an acre by density, or $3,000 a day for the skid steer with transport included. A half-acre of tallow and yaupon is one day. Most Harris County land clearing jobs are under two acres, so the day rate governs, and the number I give you by tomorrow is the number on the invoice.
Will grass grow after clearing with a mulching head?
Yes, through the chips, usually by the second month in a wet Texas spring. The layer holds moisture and shades out the first tallow sprouts, and on gumbo clay it keeps the ground from crusting. Do not rake it off; rake it and you lose the one thing holding the clay together after a Gulf downpour.
Does mulching remove stumps?
No. The head cuts trees and brush to the dirt and leaves the root crown in place under the chips. Anything under 4 inches rots out in a season; anything bigger you leave, mow around, or have ground out at $150 to $400 each before a slab. I tell you which before the clearing starts.
Is mulching better than traditional land clearing with a dozer?
On a Harris County lot, yes, nine times in ten. Forestry mulchers leave the topsoil and the layer; a dozer scrapes both into a pile you then pay to burn or haul. The dozer wins only when the lot must be completely cleared and graded for a pad on the same day, or when the Texas timber is over 12 inches.
How do I get a number for clearing my lot?
Call (713) 587-6978 or send three photos and the address. Janine answers every form and call and has a number back by tomorrow. Last spring on a lot off FM 529 near Cypress the owner sent photos at breakfast and had a clearing day booked by lunch. Forest management on a big Texas tract gets a walk first; a lot gets a number first.
