Galveston County Forestry Mulching: Texas Land Clearing, Underbrush and Site Prep Services
Galveston County clears twice, once when you buy the lot and again after the storm, and forestry mulching to clear land is the tool for both because nothing gets piled and nothing gets burned. The skid steer with a mulching head runs $3,000 a day with transport and takes a half-acre of tallow and salt cedar down to chips in one day. I went out on my own after Harvey clearing storm debris, and that work still comes down here every few summers. Call (713) 587-6978 or send three photos of your place. Janine will have a number back to you by tomorrow.
COUNTY FIELD GUIDE
Salt Cedar, Tallow and Live Oak: Forestry Mulching to Clear Land in Galveston County
Galveston County has its own mix of chinese tallow, salt cedar, wetland grasses, live oak clusters. We walk the plan through access, soil, and drainage. If a mapped floodplain or waterway is involved, we check the required approvals before dirt moves.
Chinese tallow, salt cedar where the ground is salty, wetland grasses in the low spots, and every shrub, bush and vine that moves onto a lot once the mowing stops. Live oak clusters stand on the old ridges and have stood through every hurricane; those we work around. Texas land clearing and brush removal comes in several forms, including forestry mulching, and on coastal clay and sand it is the one that does not leave ruts a truck can hide in. The drum teeth take a tallow trunk up to 8 inches in a pass; salt cedar is stringy and wraps the drum if the operator does not keep the head low, which is a thing you learn once. Over 8 inches the clearing goes to the big machine. Selective clearing is the usual order around an oak cluster: undergrowth out, the oaks left standing. No East Texas pine, no mesquite, and our acres of cedar are salt cedar along the bayous, not the Hill Country kind. A hurricane clears land too. It just doesn't sketch first.
The growth decides what can be mulched and what needs more than one pass.

Pasture and Acreage Brush Clearing Around League City, Dickinson and Santa Fe

Most acreage calls here are for 3-5 acres along FM 517, FM 646 and FM 2004: a Santa Fe horse pasture gone to tallow, fence lines on a Hitchcock farm, a tract off Highway 6 a land developer wants walked. Land clearing might mean a dozer to you. On this ground in Texas it means a drum, because the water table is a foot down in January and the skid steer on wide tracks floats where a dozer sinks to the belly pan. The skid steer clears 1 to 3 acres a day at $3,000; the dedicated high-horsepower mulcher clears 4 to 8 at $4,000 plus transport. A rancher or landowner gets usable pasture back the same week, and the land development crew gets a corridor cut for the survey without a haul-off bill. On our jobs in Santa Fe we have taken a 3-acre tallow pasture to chips in a day and a half with the Gulf wind at our backs, and I sketched it before and after. Timber folks call this vegetation management. I call it clearing brush and leaving it where it fell.
Texas Land Clearing for Storm Lots and Residential Backyards

A half-acre lot in League City, Dickinson or Texas City is one day and one machine, $3,000. That is the most common land clearing we do in this county, for a property owner who bought the overgrown lot next door or a business owner who needs a pad on I-45 completely cleared before the surveyor sets pins. League City pulled 816 single-family permits in 2025 by the Census Building Permits Survey, most of them on lots like these. The skid steer fits a 10-foot gate. We clear brush to the line, including brush the last storm left leaning on the fence, and leave a chip layer two to four inches thick that the builder's fill goes on top of. Land clearing services inside League City come with city tree rules for new builds and a no-burn rule; outside, TCEQ compliance and the county burn ban still make a dozer crew that would create burn piles a bad bet. After a named storm, what reaches the curb the county hauls; what stays on your lot is yours, and we chip it where it lies. Send photos of the gate as well as the brush.
What Clearing and Mulching Cost in Galveston County, TX
Numbers first. The lot decides the final price.
$1,000 to $2,500 an acre by density, or by the day: $3,000 for the skid steer with transport included, $4,000 plus transport for the big machine. Dense tallow and salt cedar thickets add a day. Wet ground adds a day, and in Galveston County that is most of the winter. Minimum trip is $1,200 to $1,500, and this is a long haul, an hour and a half down I-45 from the Hockley yard. Storm debris prices like brush: the Crosby job in my Field Sketches, 1.5 acres of downed hackberry and tallow after a May storm, was one day and $3,200 with no haul-off, and a League City lot after a tropical storm runs the same. Texas land clearing with a dozer and haul-off starts at $4,000 an acre and adds $600 to $1,200 a load, which is why brush clearing by mulching wins on nine of ten lots here. Stumps are a separate line, $150 to $400 each by diameter; excavation services and site preparation for a pad are separate too, and anything inside a USACE wetland line waits on a Corps permit. I do not pour concrete or install septic. Professional forestry mulching services should hand you a sketch and an invoice, and ours are on the page when we finish. Call (713) 587-6978 with the address and I will give you days and dollars for the clearing by tomorrow.

Stumps, Sprouts and Mowing After Clearing on Coastal Clay and Sand

Leave the chips down until the builder grades or the grass is through. On coastal sand the layer is a natural erosion barrier; the first north wind of October moves bare sand into the neighbor's yard, and the first Gulf downpour moves bare clay into the ditch. People call the chips eco-friendly. I call them the cheapest fill in Texas. Mow the tallow sprouts when they reach knee high, twice the first summer, because tallow roots run 3 feet into the clay and will overgrow a lot in two seasons. Stump removal is separate from clearing: we grind to the dirt, but a crown over 8 inches stays under the chips, and stump grinding runs $150 to $400 each before a slab. For site prep, the builder rakes the chips off the pad footprint and brings select fill so the slab sits above base flood elevation, which in most of this county means 2 to 4 feet up. Nearly the whole county is in a FEMA flood zone, so the pad permit comes before dirt moves. I do not talk about environmental sustainability. I talk about dirt that is still there after the land clearing and the next storm.
Service Area: Where We Mulch Along the Coast in Galveston County
Our equipment yard is in Hockley. Send the address and Janine will confirm the route.
League City, Dickinson, Santa Fe, Texas City, Friendswood and Hitchcock, plus La Marque and the open ground along FM 2004 and Highway 6. The yard is in Hockley, so this is a long service call down I-45, and the terrain is flat clay and sand all the way, so transport and the water table are the only things distance changes. Texas has 254 counties and we clear in seven of them around Houston; this is the one where the clearing comes back after every named storm. Land clearing in Galveston County means tallow and salt cedar; tree removal of a single big live oak leaning on a house is a different trade, and I know people who do it. Tell Janine which side of I-45 the clearing is on.

Galveston County Questions on Mulching, Stump Grinding and Excavation Services
If your question is about wet ground, Janine will ask me.
How much does clearing cost per acre in Galveston County?
$1,000 to $2,500 an acre by density, or $3,000 a day for the skid steer with transport included. A half-acre of tallow is one day, and 1.5 acres of storm debris was one day and $3,200. Most Galveston County land clearing jobs are under an acre, so the day rate governs, and the number by tomorrow is the number on the invoice.
Will grass grow after clearing with a mulching head?
Yes, through the chips, usually by the second month in a wet Texas spring. On coastal sand the layer is what keeps the seed from blowing off in a norther, and on clay it keeps the surface from crusting. Do not rake it off; rake it and the first storm takes the top inch of your lot to the bayou.
Does mulching remove stumps?
No. The head cuts trees and brush to the dirt and leaves the root crown under the chips. Tallow crowns under 4 inches rot in a season; bigger ones resprout unless we cut them 6 inches below grade, at $150 to $400 each. Salt cedar crowns resprout no matter what, so plan to mow. I tell you which before the clearing starts.
Is mulching better than traditional land clearing with a dozer?
On a Galveston County lot, yes, nine times in ten. Forestry mulchers leave the topsoil and the layer; a dozer scrapes both into a pile you then pay to burn or haul, and on wet clay it leaves ruts the fill truck falls into. Dozer clearing wins only for a same-day pad grade or Texas timber over 12 inches.
How do I get a number for clearing my lot?
Call (713) 587-6978 or send three photos and the address. Janine answers every form and call and has a number back by tomorrow. Last spring on a lot off FM 646 near Dickinson the owner sent photos at breakfast and we cleared it that Thursday. Forest management on a big Texas tract gets a walk first; a lot gets a number first.
